Art Lessons at All Is Grace School

Children at All Is Grace School participate in guided art lessons using simple watercolor materials, supported by teachers who focus on presence, demonstration, and hands-on learning.

Art lessons at All Is Grace School are designed to provide children with time, materials, and guidance to explore creative expression. During these sessions, children work with simple watercolor sets and paper, often with direct support from a teacher. The focus is on presence and participation rather than producing a finished result.

The materials used are basic. A small tray of watercolors, paper, and brushes are sufficient to allow children to experiment with color and form. When children are given space to work at their own pace, the activity becomes an opportunity to try something unfamiliar and to make choices independently.

Teachers play an active role in these lessons. They sit with the children, offer guidance when needed, and sometimes place their hands gently over a child’s to demonstrate technique or provide reassurance. This shared attention helps children remain engaged and allows learning to happen through direct interaction rather than instruction alone.

For many children, these sessions differ from other parts of the school day. Creative work invites a different kind of focus and allows children to explore ideas that are not tied to memorization or repetition. The classroom environment during art lessons is quieter and more deliberate, shaped by observation and participation.

Art activities also extend beyond the classroom. Children often talk about their work with family members and bring their paintings home. These moments create additional points of connection between school and home, rooted in the child’s own experience rather than assigned tasks.

The watercolor sets used at the school were brought to Zambia in 2024. Their purpose was practical: to provide accessible materials that could be reused across multiple classes. Over time, the lessons built around them have become a regular part of the school routine.

Art lessons reflect one aspect of All Is Grace School’s broader approach. Alongside academic instruction, the school provides structured activities that allow children to engage, explore, and participate in ways that support steady learning within a safe environment.
